Trains Are a Great Way to See Canada

Most of the rail network in Canada is operated by VIA Rail, while a few private companies manage specialized lines, primarily for tourism purposes. Additionally, several services operated by the American company Amtrak cross the border into Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto.

VIA Rail has two named trains: the Ocean, which transports passengers between Halifax and Montreal, and the Canadian, which crosses the continent connecting Toronto and Vancouver. VIA Rail also runs five Scenic Adventure routes aimed at a mix of tourists and rural residents who use the train’s flag stop service (this occurs when a train only stops on request, frequently somewhere in the countryside).

Besides VIA Rail, several commuter lines operate around Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. All of them record a substantially larger number of passengers (a total of up to 100 million per year). Montreal has Exo, Vancouver has the West Coast Express, and Toronto has GO Transit.

The VIA Rail network does not reach Newfoundland and Labrador or Prince Edward Island. It also does not service the Canadian territories, however, Yukon does have the Yukon Route and White Pass tourist train, which is privately managed and travels between Skagway in Alaska and Carcross during the summer.

The carriages on VIA Rail’s trains are usually of high quality, with power outlets and spacious reclining seats, including in the economy class. Long-distance overnight trains are especially roomy and passengers can enjoy panoramic views of Canadian scenery via a skyline car that boasts a special dome-shaped section. There is also an onboard café where food and drinks can be purchased. This classic Canadian train continues to use its stainless steel carriages which were originally inaugurated back in 1955.

On Canada’s eastern corridor, the daytime trains offer business class or economy options. The former includes an extra baggage allowance plus meals.
