For the first time since 1971, Canada’s population got younger. This rare change in the country’s demography results from the Canadian government’s immigration policies.
After over five decades of Canada’s first reduction in median age, history has repeated itself. Canadian Visa Expert reported that the national statistics agency’s data in 2022 showed that the median age of people living in Canada dropped to 41. Before this year, the median age had rapidly risen from 26.2 in 1971 to 41.1 in 2021.
Benefits of Immigration in Canada
Sustained immigration to Canada has contributed to the growth and development of the country. One of the benefits of immigration to Canada is the increase in the country’s labour force. Due to immigration, the labour force in Canada has been growing at a steady rate. Canadian Visa Expert added that many employers have been able to find qualified workers to fill vacant positions due to the movement of newcomers into the country. Nonetheless, employers still face challenges in hiring enough workers, because millions of Canadians are retiring.
Immigrants are not just contributing to Canada’s economy by paying taxes and filling the available jobs in the labour force. They also boost the country’s economy by spending on housing, transportation and goods.
Canada's Situation Before the Rapid Movement of Newcomers
Canada faces a serious labour shortage, because of a limited number of Canadian-born workers. This trend is due to various reasons, including a high rate of retirement, the longevity of Canadians and fewer children being born.
